In his will, the late artist Edvard Munch left all his paintings, prints, drawings, graphic sheets and sketches to the city of Oslo.
In addition to the art, the City also inherits the painter's house and studio complete with interior. Even some unidentified objects and a dead mouse was mopped up and saved and exists at the museum to this day.
For the last exhibition at the Munch Museum before they move to a new location the filmmaker Birgitte Sigmundstad was granted access to the archives and the researchers at the museum. The result is a film which through the use of archive material, seldom displayed works, interviews and a narrator looks at the myths that surrounded Edvard Munch and tells the story of how the employees at the museum strives to follow the artists thoughts and wishes for how the collection should be presented to the public.
The title refers to the first book published about Munch which states that Edvard Munch unlike Paul Gaugin needs not to travel to experience the world. In a playful way the film challenges this myth and presents an image of an artists that were engaged in the world he operated in and a museum that both want to preserve and challenge the myth of Edvard Munch.
